What is my taxpayer identity protection number?
An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number that prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number. The IP PIN is known only to you and the IRS and helps us verify your identity when you file your electronic or paper tax return.
Does your IRS PIN number change every year?
A new IP PIN will be generated each year. If we assigned you an IP PIN, you must use it to confirm your identity on any return filed during the current calendar year. This includes current year returns as well as any delinquent tax returns. An IP PIN is used only on Forms 1040, 1040-PR and 1040-SS.
When do I need to retrieve my identity protection pin?
A8: Your identity theft case may not have been resolved prior to our issuance of new IP PINs in early January or you moved prior to the end of the year and didn’t notify us. If we assigned you an IP PIN, you’ll need to Retrieve Your IP PIN to ‘e-file’ your tax return this year.
When did the IRS start sending out identity protection pins?
Beginning in January 2011, the IRS started sending notice (CP01A) to taxpayers who had previously contacted them and have since been validated by the IRS as being a victim of identity theft. The new notice will provide the taxpayer with a 6-digit identity protection PIN (IP PIN), valid for the filing of their current year federal tax return only.
Can a 6 digit PIN be used for identity theft?
No. Your 6-digit Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is only issued in cases of identity theft. You won’t be able to enter it in the Electronic Filing PIN nor the Self-Select PIN fields, both of which only have room for 5 digits.
